Onyx – Tweak and Speed Up Your Mac

OnyxOnyx is one of the many utilities for Mac OS X that allows you to tweak some of those hidden system preferences, and preform clean up tasks that keep your mac running in its most optimized form. It’s a very powerful application, but just be careful to read the checkboxes before you run any optimizations because it is possible you could do something to your system that you might not want to. Onyx is in almost constant development, and updates are released about every two weeks.

Some of the things Onyx can do:

  • Run Maintenance Scripts
  • Verify and Repair Permissions
  • Optimize the System
  • Change Finder Options
  • Change Dock Options
  • Change Dashboard/Expose Options
  • Clean Up Internet Caches and Logs
  • Read Log Files
  • Get Detailed Information about Your Mac

  • Does Onyx support Automator actions? It would be great to set up a script that would run several Onyx items from different Onyx panes that you could manually run at the end of the day.

  • I think that it’s important to point out that while this is a great app. Never just go through and indiscrimantly removing things. This is a very powerful app and will delete things many mac users know nothing about and may not want deleted.

  • decent program as far as simple tweaks go. but with such a large unix backend, why are all of these tweak apps so basic? its like one i use, tweak freak

first thing it should do is remove all the useless language packs.

  • rasterbater, as far as I know there are no Automator actions for it. That’s a good idea though, you should contact the developers about that.

  • I think Onyx accidentally deleted my Word and Excel for my mac, is this possible? Otherwise I have no idea why these programs disappeared!
